One day

The alarm rings.

It’s 6am and you’ve already hit snooze 4 times by now.

Just a few more minutes. You’re not ready to face the day yet.

You hit snooze one more time. You know it’s the last time. You don’t want to be late for work.

You force yourself to leave the bed, but you’re already behind schedule. Now there is a chance you might be late for work.

You run to the kitchen and start the coffee machine, and gobble down some breakfast.

Shit, shower, shave.

You’re in your car now, and damn it’s a nice car. It was meant to make the drive to work more enjoyable, but you’re running late and all you can think about is getting to work on time.

Traffic is a nightmare today. It feels like everyone is going to the same place as you.

Why is it that when you’re late the traffic is always worse?!?!

You don’t know how, but somehow you make it to work in the nick of time.

You fire up the computer. 30 emails have arrived over night.

The anxiety starts to increase, your heartbeat rises.

Another coffee will settle you down.

You quickly scan your emails. The junk is deleted, the internal office correspondence saved for another time.

There are only 5 emails you really need to address. You’ve got this.

Wait. A staff member swings by your office.

“Hey did you get my email?” they ask.

Of course you did, that's how email works....

“Can you come around and give me a hand?”

Your day is sabotaged before it began.

The phone rings. It’s a client following up their work. They said it wasn’t urgent when they called last week. I guess they were being polite.

You run around putting out fires all day. Lunch is from the local takeaway joint. You’re too busy to meal prep.

At last, peace and quiet. It’s 5pm and everyone has departed and the phones are off. You should be able to get work done now.

Besides, if you leave work late, the traffic will be better. Win / win right?

Your spouse will understand - you’re building a career.

By the time you get home, you’re ready to collapse.

“What should we watch tonight?”

It doesn’t matter - you’ll be asleep in 10 minutes anyway.

As you get into bed, you’re glad it’s Thursday night. Just one more day to go.

But it’s not just one more day. This is your life.

5 days a week for the rest of your life.

Maybe you’ll be able to retire one day.

Maybe something will change.

Maybe one day you’ll enjoy your work more.

Surely there’s a promotion around the corner, and that pay increase will make it all worthwhile.

There’s a lot of things that are going to happen one day.

The alarm rings.

It’s a wake up call.

Are you ready to change your life?
